2018 VIEX Exhibits and Demos

Vancouver Island Exhibition Offers Diverse Displays

The Vancouver Island Exhibition is pleased to present an array of displays for you to enjoy.

Dan Richey, Woodcarver

Dan Richey, based out of Nanaimo, is an artist of all trades.

He does everything from theme murals on your vehicle to festive art on your storefront.  However, he prides himself on his large chainsaw carvings.  One look at Dan in action and you can tell his heart and soul are in every piece he completes.  He has been doing large carvings for the last 18 years, most of which are custom, on-site projects for individual customers.

Using his collection of Husqvarna, Makita and Dremel tools, Dan changes his red cedar to a work of art at an effortless pace.

Mid Island Vintage Tractor & Equipment Club

Vintage tractor pulls put on by Mid Island Vintage Tractor and Equipment Club (MIVTEC) are again and exciting part of our program for 2018.

Vintage tractors of all shapes, sizes and ages ranging from 1923 to the mid 1960’s compete in classes based on their weight to see which one can pull a specially designed sled the farthest.  The sled pulls will be held in MIVTEC’s display area at the north east corner of the grounds ( see your program map).

Threshing demonstrations will also be happening using oats grown at our field in Cassidy.  We anticipate seeing an expanded display of vintage stationary engines and equipment this year including Lawrence McNeil’s vintage sticker machine.  The peddle tractors and water pumps will be there as usual for the kids to enjoy.

MIVTEC has been attending the fair for the past 17 years with its vintage tractors, stationary engines, washing machines and antique hand tools.

Come see us at the fair!  Our members will be please to talk with you about their tractors and equipment in our display.

MIVTEC is “Preserving the past for the future.”

Family Friendly Beverage Gardens

The Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #10, Nanaimo will once again be hosting the Beverage Garden with a different twist from previous years. Because of the numerous good comments about our “Family Friendly” section last year, we have decided to be keeping with the Family Friendly atmosphere of the Fair and open the whole beverage garden to be Family Friendly. It will be located at No. 1 Ball Diamond, near the People Mover stop for the Main Field.

To facilitate this concept within the perimeter of the Beverage Garden, the Liquor Control Board rules for a Family Friendly Premises will apply:

• Any minor entering the premises must be accompanied by their parent or guardian.
• The parents or guardians must be of legal age to consume alcohol.
• Food and non-alcoholic beverage service will be available within the licensed perimeter.
• Children leaving the premises will require their parent or guardian to meet them at the gate for readmission.

The products available will include beer, ciders and coolers. The proceeds from sales will be shared by the Legion and the VIEx Association. The VIEx will use their share as a not for profit organization to help in the costs of operating the fair at a low admission price and the Legion will use their share to facilitate community based programs such as community pancake breakfasts, community gatherings on statutory holidays and other community minded events.
